The ‘Nationaal Muziekkwartier’ Theatre Complex

Intelligent Fire Alarm Control Panels from Advanced Electronics are at the heart of an innovative fire protection solution at the new Ł65m ‘Nationaal Muziekkwartier’ Theatre Complex in the Dutch city of Enschede. Opened at the end of 2008, the 18,000 m2 building is home to a 1000-seat theatre, two music stages, a music school, studios, catering outlets and offices.

Due to the nature of the building and its environment a number of different fire protection technologies have been installed by Advanced’s local partner Hertek in partnership with Electrical Contractor, Kropman Installatietechniek. Two 4-loop Mx-4000 fire alarm control panels are connected to over 700 fire detectors, aspirating smoke detection systems and specialist flame detectors as well as controlling sprinklers and fire curtains. The Mx-4000 panels are networked together with 3 remote repeater panels and 3 fire brigade mimic panels, ensuring both the fire services and building operators have access to the fire system status from different points around the complex.

Commenting on the fire system design, Peter de Jonge, Electrical Engineering Manager at Kropman Installatietechniek said, “The challenge was to meet the needs of the different users of the complex. Phased evacuation was implemented to ensure that the whole building wasn’t evacuated in the event of a localised incident or nuisance alarm, whilst keeping staff and visitors safe in the event of a real fire. The power and flexibility of the Mx-4000 panels were key to achieving this.”

The sophisticated cause and effect programmability and powerful input/output capability of the Mx-4000 panels are used to control the ‘double-knock’ sprinkler activation, smoke curtains, elevator shutdown, fire door release and manage the phased evacuation. Aspirating smoke detection systems and flame detectors, interfaced to the Mx-4000 panels, are used to provide detection for the 30m high theatre stage area, where traditional smoke detectors would not have been suitable.

Advanced’s fault tolerant network Ad-NeT+, is capable of withstanding a single fault between nodes without loss of communications to any single panel. Up to 200 panels (nodes) can be connected on the network with a total loop length of 20km, using standard two-core fire resistant cable. The network in ‘Nationaal Muziekkwartier’ allows the status of all 700 devices and specialist detection systems to be interrogated on any of the fire panels, repeaters or fire brigade mimics.

Advanced Electronics Ltd manufactures a comprehensive range of intelligent control and indicating panels, software and peripherals for fire detection, smoke control and the emergency lighting market. The EN54 approved Mx-4000 series and the UL 864 approved Ax-Series fire systems offer enhanced features for the end-user, system designer and installer. Advanced Electronics also manufacture the LifeLine family of DDA-compliant fire safety products for the deaf and hearing impaired.
