LEGOLAND Windsor

EMS Group has supplied a wireless networked fire alarm system for LEGOLAND Windsor, providing the 150 acre theme park with a reliable integrated solution and a platform for future expansion. The park’s existing standalone conventional fire alarm systems are protecting the numerous buildings, rides and plant equipment throughout the park. These systems were originally interconnected using a security multiplex system back to a central control room. It is this ageing multiplex system that is being replaced with a radio-based wire-free system from EMS as part of a site-wide upgrade to the fire protection.

Five 5000 FirePoint analogue addressable fire alarm panels have been installed by Chubb Fire at strategic points throughout the park. All the panels are connected via a radio network, with one 96-zone panel located in the main security gatehouse acting as the master alarm station. Each of the existing conventional fire systems is interconnected to one of the 5000 FirePoint panels via an EMS radio interface unit. Nearly 70 EMS detection devices have also been installed to provide fire protection to new areas of the park. Whenever LEGOLAND needs to expand its fire detection capability in the future it can simply add new wire-free fire sensors, call points or sounders to any of the FirePoint panels.

Commenting on the success of the project, Kieran Maher, LEGOLAND Windsor’s Maintenance Director said, “The EMS wireless fire system solution is perfect for our 150 acre site. We now have a great base to allow us to upgrade all our various systems on to one integrated network in the future.”

The cost benefits of installing a wireless fire/signalling solution in an application like this are significant. The cost of installing expensive fire-rated cable throughout the park would have been prohibitive. Installation times are also dramatically reduced - with no disruption to the park’s operation. The new radio-network now provides the security staff with far more reliable and detailed information should a fire incident occur, ensuring better staff and visitor safety.
